Origin and Fate of the Chukchi Slope Current Using a Numerical Model and In?Situ Data

A regional coupled sea ice-ocean model and mooring/shipboard measurements are used to investigate the origins, seasonality, downstream fate of Chukchi Slope Current (CSC). Three years (2013–2015) integration indicates that, in mean, slope current transports ?0.45 Sv Pacific water northwestward along continental slope. Only 62% this emanates from Barrow Canyon, while rest (38%) is fed by a westward jet extending southern Beaufort Sea. The merges with outflow canyon, forming CSC. Due these two distinct has double velocity core at times. This consistent double-core structure seen ship-based observations. Seasonal changes volume, heat, freshwater appear be related upstream flows. tracer diagnostic suggests that part over upper continues toward East Siberian Sea, portion overlying deeper isobaths flows northward into Borderland, where it ultimately gets entrained Gyre.
